Sierra Leone not on a fast track - Chinese ambassador

The Chinese ambassador to Sierra Leone has delivered what amounts to a frank talk in a paper delivered to journalists yesterday.

Kuang Weilin says that as African countries compete “fiercely” with one another for more investment and assistance from China, Sierra Leone must be "on a fast track" or it will be "unable to take full advantage of many opportunities".

He says he hopes "some people will be highly motivated and move faster so that both countries can act in tandem on some important projects".

Pendembu-Kailahun road "a death trap"

Concerns have been expressed that Kailahun town will soon be cut off from the rest of the country. The 25-kilometer road linking the town to Pendembu is said to be in a poor state rendering it almost impassable.

Groundnut farming booms in Binkolo

Forty-five-year-old farmer and former councillor of the Bombali district council, Juliana Conteh, says she planted ten bushels of groundnuts and hopes to harvest more than ten bags, which she says is her only source of livelihood.

“From groundnut farming I have secured a political and teaching career and it still contributes to solving the problems of my four children and other family members” she says, adding that “Groundnut farming is a women’s affair in Binkolo”.

Parliament queries Freetown City Council

The committee on local government in parliament has summoned officials of the Freetown City Council to query them on the uncontrollable increase in filth across the municipality and the hazards associated with that.

Manager of waste management company, Sulaiman Paker told the committee that workers had been on strike since 28 August 2013, demanding that their salaries for July and August be paid.

Alpha Kanu calls for overhead fibre cables

Minister of Information and Communications Alpha Kanu has appealed to information communication experts and other colleague ministers in Mano River Union countries “to consider the deployment of fibre optic cables overhead instead of underground”.

According to newsfeed from the information ministry, Kanu said this would “reduce cost and also facilitate faster deployment of the fibre cable for use by the citizens”.
