United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to announce, shortly, the appointment of Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Zainab Hawa bangura as his Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict. She succeeds Sweden’s Margot Wallström who was appointed in February 2010.

Until her current ministerial position, Mrs Bangura had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and had been a civil society activist before working for the UN Mission in Liberia. She became the first woman to run for president in Sierra Leone in 1996.

In what seems to have been going on for at least five years, Politico has uncovered what is apparently a huge passport scam at Sierra Leone’s consulate in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Members of the Academic Staff Association of the Bonthe Technical College, which became an affiliate of Njala University after the University Act of 2004, have threatened to go on a peaceful stay-away strike action if the government fails to address their “perennial plights.”

The iron ore company, African Minerals Ltd., has completed payment of Le 1,099,000,000 as 2012 surface rent for mining and rail operations to about ten chiefdoms in the Bombali, Tonkolili and Port Loko districts, north of Sierra Leone.

About this same time last year the company paid some Le 1,087,000,000 for the same purpose, making it what the company refers to as an important annual event on the calendar of their corporate activities.

The maverick leader of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change has apologised to the people of Bo district for endorsing Ernest Bai Koroma in 2007 during the run-off presidential election.
