The disabled in Sierra Leone wants Deputy Social Welfare minister position

Persons with Disability (PWDs) have said they want one of them to be appointed deputy minister of social welfare.

Speaking in an interview after a press conference held by Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) on the 20th July 2023, Acting President of the Union Salieu Turay said “It is our hope that the president kept that position for a qualified person with disability. So we are calling on His Excellency the President to think it necessary to give the position to a person with a disability”.

Liberia allays fears over clustered cattle deaths

After completing laboratory examinations and analyses on the causes of death of 36 cattle within the country, the Ministry of Agriculture’s (MOA) team in Liberia has denied the discovery of infectious animals to human diseases including anthrax or brucellosis.

A press release issued by the Agriculture Ministry on the 19th of July, 2023 emphasized that no disease was found among the dead cattle tested in Foya District where the alleged outbreak was reported.

Girls beat boys in primary school-leaving exams in Sierra Leone

In the just-announced National Primary School Examination (NPSE) results, it is noted that 8 or (73%) of the 11 top performers in the 2023 examinations were girls.

The results were published by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) on the 18th of July 2023.

The MBBSE report indicated that the highest aggregate T-score obtained in the 2023 Primary School leavers exam was 339 (three hundred and thirty-nine).

Only 60% of MPs debated in Sierra Leone’s last parliament

The Institute for Governance Reform’s latest Parliamentary Tracker has indicated that 40% of Parliamentarians in the last parliament did not participate in any debate.

“40 MPs spoke only one or two times in all 277 sittings or did not speak at all,” the report reads in part.

Procurement panel cautions Sierra Leone’s Foreign Ministry

The Independent Procurement Review Panel (IPRP) has on Friday 14th July, 2023, in a ruling cautioned  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) to be seen practicing and adhering to public procurement  laws to avoid evaluation processes that are not in tune with the 2016 Public Procurement Acts and Statutory  Regulations 2020.

The Panel further advised there is need for proper documentation of processes and training of staff on public procurement issues.

SLAJ to award 2023 best practicing journalists

The Serra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has in its news release dated 17th July 2023, announced entries for an award for best- practicing journalists and media outlets for the year 2023.

The press release indicated that recognition of outstanding and professional journalists is a move that symbolises self-regulatory and serves as motivation towards increasing professionalism in journalism in Sierra Leone.
