Sierra Leone bans meat from Liberia

Importation of Livestock from Liberia has been banned by the Government of Sierra Leone, following reports of discovery of 36 dead Cattle in a field at Kelima Bendu Town,  Foyah District.

Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Agriculture, and Food Security in a public notice, issued by the Ministry of Information said it was instituting a Temporary Ban on the movement of cattle, goats and sheep along the country’s border with Liberia and prohibiting “the entrance of meat and meat products from Kailahun,Kenema and Pujehun to other districts in Sierra Leone.   

All livestock markets in Kailahun, Kenema, and Pujehun Districts have also been ordered to close down and the movement of meat and meat products from Liberia into Sierra Leone prohibited.

Also agriculture ministry officers and partners have also stepped up, according to the notice,    “surveillance in slaughterhouses for sick animals and humans with signs and symptoms of Anthrax in Kailahu,Kenema and Pujehun”.

The dead animals in Liberia were found by the authorities there,  on Thursday 6th July this year , few miles to Sierra Leone’s Pujehun district.

An inter-governmental animal health specialists team under the One Health Platform in Liberia is reported to be  investigating reasons behind the deaths of the cattle .
