Sierra Leone swears in Vice President who says he is committed to serve

The newly -sworn in Vice President  of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has made a commitment to serve re-elected President Julius Maada Bio so they could collectively help develop the nation.

Jalloh at his swearing in ceremony on the 29th June 2023 stated that “I reaffirm my commitment to serve you with utmost dedication, as you embark on another five excited years to implement your manifesto to the people of this country”. 

APC protests election results

Sierra Leone’s main Opposition Party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) has questioned the results of the June 24th, 2023 elections announced last Tuesday by the Chief Electoral Commissioner Mohamed K. Konneh.

Speaking to Politico on Wednesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Sidi Yayah Tunis said the party is still engaging on its next line of action and that they will come out with a position in the shortest possible time

Sierra Leone pilgrims return July

Sierra Leonean Hajj Pilgrims will be returning on the 20th of July 2023, according to Sierra Leone’s Information Attaché to Saudi Arabia, Abu Bakarr Salieu Bah.

Bah made this disclosure in a brief interview by Politico on the 29th of June 2023. When asked to clarify the report of a Sierra Leonean pilgrim deceased, Bah stated that it was false.

Insufficient ballot papers in polling stations – Report indicates

The Carter Center Observer Mission in its post-elections preliminary statement has indicated that there were insufficient ballot papers in some polling stations in Freetown and that they ran out in midafternoon.

The report says some polling stations opened late on Election Day due to lack of materials and that the voting process assessed was “reasonable” or “very good” in 93 percent of polling stations visited.

MRCG observes heightened disinformation

As part of many institutions that monitored the just concluded multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone, the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) observed that unverified and fake pronouncements of election results were prevalent on social media especially Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, mostly by either the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) or the All Peoples Congress (APC) party supporters and sympathizers.

PAWP urges ECSL to recruit more Adhoc staff

The PAN African Women Projects (PAWP) has called on the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) to improve the recruitment of Adhoc Staff for the next multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone.

PAWP made this call in a press briefing held at the Atlantic Hotel, Lumley Beach Road in Freetown on the 29th June, 2023 after observing the just concluded general elections in the country.

Sierra Leone security architecture frowns at civil society outfit

The Security Sector has expressed dismay at what it says is the publication of parallel Presidential election results by National Elections Watch (NEW) – a Coalition of Civil Society Organisations operating in Sierra Leone.

 

A statement dated 29th June 2023 signed by the National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker who is also Head of Office of National Security (ONS) , said the sector was gravely concerned about NEW’s publication, and its potential   implications for national security.
