Sierra Leone Gov’t and ILO engage employers on Labour laws

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security, in partnership with the International Labor Organization (ILO), has held an interactive engagement with employers and employees from across Kenema at the District Council Hall in the city.

Addressing the participants, Deputy Secretary to the Minister of Labour, Allieu Bakar Conteh, said the meeting was designed to discuss employer and employee relationship, noting that over the years the ministry had received several complaints relating to the labour laws of the country.

Masalia Village to Host Youth Market

Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Luseni Kallon, has turned the sod for the construction of a youth market in Masalia village, Portloko District in the north of the country.

The market, according to officials, will serve as a major point of exchange where the harvested products from the youth farm, another government funded youth support project, would be sold. The market is situated at about 1000 meters away from the National Youth Farm,

Water crisis hits Sierra Leone as human rights commission wades in

The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) must take its responsibility of water provision seriously because water is a human rights issue, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has said.

Officials of the Commission are worried that difficulty in accessing water by many Sierra Leoneans has had far-reaching implications, amounting to violations of human rights.

Sierra Leone has two agencies that are charged with providing water to the population: SALWACO and the Guma Valley Water Company.

Sierra Leone Trade Minister renegotiates cement price

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Edward Hinga Sandy, has disclosed plans to engage cement mnufactures and suppliers amidst concerns over the rise I prices of the commodity in Sierra Leone.

Mr Sandy told journalists last week that he had agreed with the stakeholders to renegotiate despite the challenges the companies involved face. 

Two companies: Dangote and Leocem, dominate the sector. 

Rights group campaign against female genital cutting in Bondo

Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP) has held a panel discussion on the need to consider removing cutting from the “Bondo” society.
The panel discussion brought together parents, religious leaders and Sowei’s from across the country.
The discussion was held to commemorate the day of Zero Tolerance on Female Genital Mutilation.
