Sixty journalists get training on reporting malaria in Sierra Leone

Speak UP Africa, a public health advocacy organization based in Dakar, Senegal, has trained 60 journalists in Sierra Leone on reporting on the killer disease - Malaria.

According to the organizers of the training which took place on Thursday, February 6, the one-day training was geared towards increasing the knowledge base of journalists on Malaria and enable them to do in-depth reporting on the disease in the country.

Malaria Media Coalition launched in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has joined about a dozen other African countries in a continent-wide crusade with the launch of a media coalition against malaria.

The Malaria Media Coalition, launched last Thursday, is meant to boost the country’s effort to meet its commitments to the ‘Zero Malaria Starts With Me’ campaign, a global initiative against the parasitic disease that is responsible for the deaths over 200million people worldwide.

Citizens’ Perception Survey shows increased access to health services in Sierra Leone

Despite persistence in corruption in the health sector, access to healthcare services is increasing steadily, the latest survey by a UK-funded project in Sierra Leone has revealed.

The Citizens’ Perception Survey (CPS) on Service Delivery, conducted under the Strengthening Accountability, Building Inclusion (SABI) programme, showed that 88 percent of respondents were satisfied with the services they received at health facilities in 2019, representing a marked improvement from 79 percent in 2018 and 61 percent in 2017.

Sierra Leone credit unions gradually Improving - experts

A group of four coaches from the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation (ILCUF) have observed that credit unions in Sierra Leone were gradually improving in their activities, as illustrated in the impact of their operations on the people they serve.

The ILCUF officials made the observation as part of a report presented at the end of a two-week coaching and study in the country, which culminated in a two-day training of 24 leaders and staff of Cooperative Credit Unions.

Coronavirus: Sierra Leone introduces compulsory quarantine for travelers from China

Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation said it has imposed a 14-day quarantine period for all travellers coming from China, the epicenter of the ongoing Coronavirus disease outbreak.

According to the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Alpha Tejan Wurie, the move is a way to help reduce the risks of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Sierra Leone considers banning Serena vehicles

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRSA) is considering banning Serena vehicles from plying all major highways across the country.

The authority said the decision is based on statistics which show that Serena vehicles accounted for the highest number of vehicles that were involved in road accidents last year.

Serena is a brand of Nissan vehicles. In Sierra Leone it is one of the most common brands of vehicles used for public transportation.
