Bio set to launch national digital innovation strategy for Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio, will today launch a national vision to digitize the way his government manages its resources and how citizens receive services.

The National Digital and Innovation Strategy (NIDS), developed by the Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), is in line with the president’s priority of human capital development.

Civic education to be re-introduced in Sierra Leone schools

The National Council for Civic Education & Development (NaCCED) say they are planning to reintroduce civic education in schools across Sierra Leone by next academic year. Director of Curriculum Development & Training at the Council, Alphan Tajawie, told Politico that the aim was to foster knowledge on citizens’ rights and responsibilities in the country.

Two killed in Sierra Leone capital, police make no headway

Two bodies have been found at the premises of the Sierra Fishing Company at Kissy Dockyard in Freetown. They were discovered on Tuesday 23rd October but the news has only just emerged.

One of the deceased, Aruna Kargbo, 27, was reportedly stabbed by a man known as Amara. The body of Amara was also later found dead in the same compound on the same day.

Sierra Leone journalist murder trial, pathologist’s testimony postponed

A Magistrate court at Pademba Road in Freetown has postponed the testimony of the country’s Pathologist, Dr Owiz Koroma in the preliminary investigation into the alleged murder of journalist, Ibrahim Samura to Tuesday 1st November.

Magistrate Mark Ngegba had to adjourn the case following an application by the lead defense lawyer, Melron Wilson Nicol, who cited concerns over the health of his clients.

Sierra Leone chimpanzee champion nominated for global conservation award

The founder and director of Sierra Leone's Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) has been nominated for the 2020 Indianapolis Prize, which is one of the world’s leading awards for animal conservation.

Bala Amarasekaran will be competing with about a dozen other conservationists across the world for the coveted award.

The nominating committee and jury will select six finalists and determine a winner, who will be honored at the Indianapolis Prize Gala slated for September 12, 2020.

For "illegal" electricity connection, fish baron aces Le 50 million fine

The Bango Fishing Enterprise, a subsidiary of Marouf Saad Company, could be fined up to Le50 million if found guilty of electricity theft.

The company is under investigation by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) on suspicion of illegally connecting to EDSA power source and using electricity without paying.

A raid by EDSA and CID officials last week Tuesday led the arrest of the manager of Bango Fishing Enterprise.

Construction of New Midwifery School to start in Kenema

The site for the construction of the midwifery school in Kenema has been officially handed over to the contractor.

The handing over was done on Friday at a ceremony presided over by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO), Dr. Donald Bash-Taqi and the Trading Coordinator for the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Dr. Joseph Edem- Hotah.
