Two new MPs join Sierra Leone Parliament

Parliament in Sierra Leone has sworn in two new Members of Parliament. The new members, Paramount Chief Alhaji Kandeh Paria Kawolleh II of Karene District and Hamidu Holla Mansaray of Constituency 043 in Koinadugu District were both sworn in on Tuesday, 28th October.

The MPs are in parliament as replacement for two former members who passed away this year.

Mano River Union boss allays fears over Guinea

A coalition of opposition parties and some civil society groups have come together to resist an apparent attempt by President Alpha Conde to run for an unconstitutional third term in office. The country has huge trade relations with its many geographical neighbours especially Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone with whom it forms the Mano Rover Union (MRU).

“ActionAid Sierra Leone has empowered us” – Kambia women say

Women in Samu village, Kambia district say ActionAid Sierra Leone has empowered them by providing for them a seed bank and rice mill, among other interventions.

The Chairlady of a group of 45 women, Aminata Kamara told Politico on Friday that the social justice and humanitarian organization had worked extensively for them and in the rest of the northern region and some other parts of the country for over 30 years. Kambia was one of the first places the NGO started working in Sierra Leone.

Justices of the Peace plead for backlog pay in Sierra Leone

Two Justices of Peace (JPs) in Pujehun and Bo districts in Sierra Leone have told Politico that they haven’t received their backlog of salaries for up to 27 months.

The two JPs are part of seven JPs in the Southern region of the country, of whom four are already dead, who have not received their pay within the period. They blamed the delay on the judiciary.

Sierra Leone launches first policy for the aged

Sierra Leone on Thursday launched its first National Aging Policy which seeks to cater for the aged considering how vulnerable they get mostly as a result of their different conditions.

Among other things the policy ensures old people get access to basic services and are accorded the opportunity to fully participate in the daily life of their communities.

Stakeholders discuss reducing inequality in Sierra Leone

Government and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have concluded an engagement session in Freetown aimed at reducing inequality in Sierra Leone in the areas of public spending, taxation and in the labour market.

The policy forum was part of a commitment by both Movement against Inequality Sierra Leone (MAISL) and OXFAM Sierra Leone.

MAISL is a coalition of over 45 CSOs with structures at the district, regional and national levels.
