Sierra Leone Standards Bureau “under-resourced”

The Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) has raised concern over the institution’s incapacity to effectively carry out its mandate of ensuring a safe society through a quality inspection regime.

Prof. Thomas B. R Yormah, who was speaking at the government’s weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communication on Thursday, said the Bureau lacked the necessary resources to enable it perform its functions.

Sierra Leone Presidential guard punished for beating journalists

A member of the presidential guard found guilty of beating two journalists has been removed and sent for retraining, the government of Sierra Leone has said.

Minister of Information and Communication, Abdul Rahman Swaray, said on Thursday that the government will also refund all the expenses spent for medical treatment by the two female journalists from SLBC who were beaten while covering a football match at the National Stadium.

Moijue Kaikai resigns from Sierra Leone APC party

Moijue Kaikai, former Minister of Social Welfare in the Ernest Bai Koroma administration, has resigned from the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC).

Mr Kaikai in a letter dated 18th October, a copy of which he shared with Politico on Thursday October 24th, said he was also leaving active politics to focus on serving his people.

Sierra Leone: 27-year-old man "rapes" girl, 13, deaf and mute

Police in Grafton Village are investigating an alleged sexual penetration of a 13-year-old girl. The girl who is dumb and partially deaf was sexually penetrated by 27 year old Joseph Samuel Bassie.

The mother of the victim, explained to Politico that on the day of the incident, the perpetrator sneaked into the house using the back entrance to commit the heinous crime.

Sierra Leone suspects African Swine Fever in mass deaths of pigs

The Sierra Leone government has said it suspected the African Swine Fever (ASF) to be behind the death of hundreds of pigs in the country, in an ongoing outbreak that has raised public health fears.

Officials of the Ministries of Health and Agriculture said on Tuesday that a total of 1, 042 animals have died, out of about 1, 080 affected animals, as of October 16. All the cases were reported in four communities - Kroo Bay, Moa Wharf, Kanikay and Eastern Bome - all slum communities.

Students issue ultimatum to Gov’t of Sierra Leone over their national union

Students Union presidents from various colleges across Sierra Leone have given the government a 12-day ultimatum to allow for the conduct of elections to reconstitute the executive of the National Union of Sierra Leone Students (NUSS).

These students announced the ultimatum in a press conference on Monday at the SLAJ Headquarters in Freetown.
