The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDN-SL) has called on the government to give more protection to girls in the country. The Executive Secretary of the HRDN-SL, Alphonso Gbanie made the call in a press conference on Monday.
The press conference was convened as part of commemoration of the African Human Rights Day, which is celebrated on 21st October. The day is mostly used to reflect on how much the continent has done regarding human rights issues.

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDA) has started a two-week training program for women entrepreneurs. The training which started last week will focus on small and medium enterprise owners in the east and the southern region of the country.
The training is being conducted in the districts of Kenema, Kailahun and Kono in the East and Bo, Moyamba, Pujehun, and Bonthe in the South.

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) has sacked three lecturers over their involvement in an alleged examination malpractice.
In a statement, the university administration said the decision was reached at the conclusion of an investigation into allegations that the unnamed lecturers “fraudulently” changed grades of students after examination.

The First Lady of Sierra Leone has appealed to parents, local authorities and politicians in Pujehun District to do more to protect children in the district against sexual penetration and other gender-based crimes.
Fatima Bio made the call during her Hands off Our Girls campaign tour to the district on Saturday.
“What we need in Pujehun is development but the first development is taking care of our children. In the last 10 years, Pujehun has fallen behind in every development indicator,” Mrs Bio said.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) say they are currently rolling out a project designed to empower survivors of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).
The project – Protection of Girls and Women Against Sexual Penetration and Gender Based Violence (POWER) – has already given grants to 493 women in Kenema District.
