Africell, UN Women sign MoU to promote women’s empowerment in Sierra Leone

The telecommunications operator Africell and the United Nations Women have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in promoting Gender Equality and Women’s empowerment in Sierra Leone.

The MoU was designed to cover three core areas of cooperation; advocacy action on ending violence against Women and Girls, Male engagement in advocacy and actions for gender equality, and the empowerment of women and institutional capacity strengthening within Africell.

Cordaid signs agreement with Sierra Leone Police to improve service delivery

Cordaid has signed a cooperation agreement with the Sierra Leone Police to increase its responsiveness and service delivery. The agreement is part of Cordaid’s strategic engagement under the Security and Justice Results-Based Financing (RBF) Project,

The agreement formalizes the relationship and partnership between the Sierra Leone Police and Cordaid.

Cordaid, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police, has been implementing the RBF project since January this year.

Sierra Leone and India deepen ties

Sierra Leone and India on Sunday October 13 signed a raft of agreements geared towards strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

The deals, in the form of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs), were sealed following a meeting at State House between President Julius Maada Bio and visiting Indian Vice President, Vankaiah Naidu.

Pujehun: Disappointment over cancellation of presidential visit

Some residents of the southern district of Pujehun have expressed disappointment over the cancellation of a planned visit by President Julius Maada Bio.

The expression of disappointment by these people is a culmination of a long standing frustration over the long overdue visit by the president to the district since his election in April last year..

Besides being a traditional stronghold of the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Pujehun voted overwhelming for Bio in the 2018 general elections.

Alleged suicide turns murder case

The death of a young lad in Kissy that began as a suicide investigation has turned into suspicion of murder.

19-year-old Abu Bakar Kamara’s body was found on Thursday 3rd October in a position that suggested that he hanged himself.

But the result of a postmortem conducted by Dr Simeon Owiz Koroma, according to information received by Politico, shows that the boy died as a result of strangulation.

Sierra Leone First Lady launches "Hands Off Our Girls" campaign in Kono

First Lady Fatima Bio on Saturday launched her anti-Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) movement in Kono with a passionate appeal for support from traditional and religious leaders.

The ‘Hands Off Our Girls’ campaign seeks to end SGBV, with particular emphasis on rape, which has taken an epidemic proportion in the country.

Sierra Leone Sports Ministry aims to create 5,000 jobs

The Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, has told journalists that the ministry is aiming to create 5000 jobs through sports by 2023. He made the pronouncement on Friday following the presentation of the ministry’s budget for the year 2020.

Nyelenkeh said his ministry is at advance stages of forming the National Sports Authority (NSA) through which all sporting disciplines will benefit.
