HEAL Sierra Leone’s Mobile Trade Fair ends in Bo

Heal Sierra Leone on Friday October 11 concluded a 10-day education trade fair in Bo, the second leg of its two months nationwide campaign designed to promote education and provide affordable learning materials to parents and students.

Heal Sierra Leone is a civil society organization that campaigns for quality and affordable education in the country. The trade fair, which it organizes annually, has become its major event in the last four years.

50/50 targets more Sierra Leone women participation in politics

The women’s right group 50-50 has launched a project in three districts across the country designed to empower women in politics. The project, which was launched in Kenema, Kambia and Tonkolili, is called ‘Beyond Politics of Men: Empowering Women to be Effective Political Actors in Sierra Leone.’

The idea is to encourage the participation of more women in politics ahead of the next general elections in 2023. The project is done with the collaboration of Search for Common Ground and sponsored by the European Union.

Sierra Leone army gets anti-terrorism training

The Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Europe (FASTEUR) has trained members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces on medical and humanitarian aid procedures.

The training is meant for non-medical personnel to become familiar with trauma care in combat situations, with the goal of reducing causalities.

Some 45 RSLAF officers took part in the training conducted at the Peace Mission Training Center in Hastings, outside Waterloo.

Sierra Leone engages ECOWAS on cross border infrastructure

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) in Sierra Leone has started talks with ECOWAS on setting up infrastructure for a Joint Border Post between Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The engagement which took place at MOPED’s office in Freetown last week focused on how Sierra Leone and Liberia can work together better along their respective borders to facilitate movement and trade, according to a statement released by MOPED.

World Bank urges Sierra Leone to empower women

The World Bank has called on African governments to adopt and enforce strong policies that are geared towards empowering women. The call was made as part of the many recommendations the group made in the latest edition of the Africa’s Pulse, a regular report on the economic status of the continent.

World Bank Vice President for Africa, Hafez Ghanem, said: “Empowering women will help boost growth. African policy makers face an important choice: business as usual or deliberate steps towards a more inclusive economy.”

"Breast Cancer is no death sentence", assures survivor in Sierra Leone

Siminge K. Mondeh, a breast cancer survivor, on Thursday told a group of women that breast cancer, though fierce, is not a death sentence as there are chances for survival.

Mondeh’s testimony was part of a session organized by the Well Woman Clinic, a reproductive health facility that campaigns against breast cancer. The event was part of ongoing commemoration of the Breast Cancer Month – October.

During the event, volunteers of Well Woman provided free screening for breast cancer for the participants.
