Protests mar launch of Chinese miner in southern Sierra Leone

The launch of a new Chinese mining company in Moyamba was marred last week after a protest by angry youths in the area. It has now been deferred indefinitely.

Representatives of Afro Asia Mining Company, which is looking to mine for bauxite after acquiring a government license, were scheduled to meet with landowners and local authorities on Thursday, 3 October, when the aggrieved youths blocked a major route leading to the meeting venue. 

Sierra Leone hosts ECOWAS Bank Governors

Sierra Leone is playing host to the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) whose Board of Governors hold their Ordinary Meeting here today at the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel.

EBID is the financial  arm  of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West Africa States) which is a regional bloc comprising 15 of the 16 countries in West Africa – excepting Mauritania.

EBID’s mandate is to intervene both in private and public sector development of its member states.

Agriculture demands 10% of Sierra Leone's national budget

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS), is requesting for 10% of the national budget for 2020.

Representatives from the ministry made the call during the presentation of its strategic plan and budget for the 2020 Financial Year.

MAFFS is asking for Le 141.6 billion as its recurrent budget for 2020. It also appeals that 73% (Le 106.7 billion) of this money be disbursed by mid next year.

Sierra Leone postal service calls for investment in postal service

Officials of the Sierra Leone Postal Service (SALPOST) have called on the government of Sierra Leone to invest in the institution in order for it to regain its space in society.

Brima Katta, Managing Director made this call at the government weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communication ahead of the commemoration of the International Postal Day on 9th October.

New British ambassador says relations with Sierra Leone based on mutual respect

The relationship between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone has been based on mutual respect and will remain so for the benefit of the two peoples, the new UK High Commissioner in Freetown assures.

Simon Mustard who assumed office in September spoke to Politico in an exclusive interview at the British High Commission in Freetown on Thursday as part of his first engagement with the local media since he arrived in the country. He outlined the priorities of his government to Sierra Leone which he assured would be pursued.
