Kono forms Task Force against people trafficking in Sierra Leone

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, has embarked on the establishment of teams of task force across the country as part of implementation of the 2005 Human Trafficking Act.

A total of 13 district task force were set up between September 23 and September 28.

Sierra Leons says ban on right-hand vehicles irreversible

The six-year ban on importation of right-hand drive vehicles is here to stay, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has said, amidst a campaign by some Sierra Leoneans for a lifting of the ban.

An official said the government has no intention of even revisiting the decision taken in 2013 in response to high rates of road accidents, which were largely blamed on the proliferation of right-hand drive vehicles in a country where the standard is left-hand drive vehicles.

Residents plead for a proper bridge in Freetown suburb of Kamayama

Residents of Kamayama community have intensified their call to the government to construct a bridge that is safe for them.

Since the founding of the community, its inhabitants have relied on wooden bridges, which have been replaced repeatedly.

The current bridge, constructed before 2017, is in a dilapidated state. It used to stand on three pillars but one of them was washed away during the 2017 mudslide and flooding. The floor of the bridge, which is made up of wood, is gradually deteriorating.  

No headway for alcohol policy in Sierra Leone

As the world marks October 2nd as No Alcohol Day, the Director of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), Dr. Santigie Sesay has told Politico that government is yet to have any policy to control alcohol in the country. His remarks highlights the challenge the country faces with alcohol consumption.

Regent head woman blames Gov’t for environmental degradation in Sierra Leone

The village headwoman of Regent has expressed concern over the state of environmental degradation in and around the community and the apparent lack of concern exhibited by the government. 

Mrs Elenorah Jokomie Metzger said the SLPP-led administration has failed to keep the pace in environmental protection in their community, as was done by its predecessor APC-led administration.

Sierra Leone to refurbish 250 quarters for public workers

The Ministry of Works and Public Assets have said they will embark on refurbishing up to 250 government quarters across the country. The Minister, Peter Bayuku Conteh, said this work is part of the Le 22 billion budget that they are demanding for the 2020 Financial Year.

Conteh made the announcement during the presentation of their budget on Monday, at the ongoing budget discussion forum.

World Bank meeting seeks sustainable solution to Sierra Leone's energy deficit

The World Bank and the Sierra Leone government have begun discussion on a path to a sustainable energy solution for the country.

A two-day Energy Roundtable, bringing together representatives of key institutions in the sector and development partners ended on Tuesday, where  participants discussed and assessed the critical issues and challenges facing the sector with a view of agreeing on priority areas for intervention.
