50% Sierra Leoneans have paid a bribe for public service – new report

The 2019 Global Corruption Barometer has shown that 52% of people in Sierra Leone paid bribe for public services. This means that one out of every two people have paid bribe to access public services sometime in the last four years.

The figure is an increase of from 2015 which was 41%. It also reflects how much the country’s anti-graft body must contend with in the fight against corruption.

COI: Winners Chapel confirms former Minister sold state land to them

Testimonies in the commissions of inquiry on Wednesday have revealed that the former Minister of Political Affairs Kemo Sesay, sold state land to Winners Chapel Church. The land in question, which is situated at Regent Road, Hill Station, belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture before it was reportedly given to Mr Sesay as compensation.

On Saturday, 13th July 2019 the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will elect a new President and various officials to serve in its executive council.

The new President will replace Kelvin Lewis, who has served two terms, as per the association’s constitution.

This year’s election will be contested by current Secretary General, Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah and a former Secretary General, Mustapha Sesay. Both candidates share significant experiences in journalism and SLAJ politics.

Landmark ruling against China's Shandong in Sierra Leone

The Chinese mining company, Shandong, successor of the defunct African Minerals Limited (AML), has been ordered in a landmark ruling to pay the sum of Le1.6 billion in end of service benefits to a former employee.

The ruling on 9 July by a Freetown High Court judge will serve as a major morale booster to hundreds of former employees of AML and Shandong who have been seeking to receive their severance benefits. This case was filed by Musa Alie Bangura, who served AML between 2004 and October 2013.
