Bollore trains first Sierra Leoneans to operate modern port equipment

Freetown Terminal Limited, a subsidiary of Bollore Group says it is investing $120million in port expansion and development, as well as the purchase of modern port equipment. In this regard the company is training locals to handle the new state-of-the-art equipment.

Speaking to journalists, the Country Manager of Bollore Group, Captain Fabjanko Kokan said that in this regard they had contracted a Belgium-based-company, Global Port Training, to train 35 Sierra Leoneans to operate brand new port equipment brought into the country in May this year.

Ebola survivors suffer from severe psychiatric problems, new report says

A new report out this week says Ebola survivors “need continued access to healthcare” because they suffer from severe neurological and psychiatric problems.

The researchers from University of Liverpool and the Kings’ Sierra Leone Partnership call for “more specialist support for the most severely affected patients” and detail several disorders among Ebola survivors in Sierra Leone. 

These disorders include stroke and debilitating migraine-type headaches. 

Sierra Leone cabinet Okays commission of inquiry on former president Koroma’s administration

In what appears to be a White Paper, the Sierra Leone Government has upheld the Governance Transition Report alleging widespread corruption in the Ernest Bai Koroma administration, and endorsed recommendations contained therein.

In a statement from State House, cabinet has thereby instructed that the Chief Minister and the Attorney General lead the implementation of the recommendations “in a timely manner”.

The Attorney-General is to set up a Commission of Inquiry to be co-led by a foreign judge and a Sierra Leonean judge whose names will be announced shortly.

Sierra Leone: Ill treatment of dogs hinders rabies elimination target

Sierra Leoneans must start treating their pet dogs with respect and care if the country is to meet the global target of eliminating rabies by 2030, animal rights campaigners have pleaded.

The campaigners blame the deplorable condition of dogs for the prevalence in rabies, a deadly viral disease that’s said to claim over 200 lives in the country annually.

Rabies is transmitted via the bite of an infested animal, and spreads from the saliva of the vector, causing inflammation to the brain in humans and other mammals.

DISCOVERY OF 144.12 CARAT DIAMOND IN SIERRA LEONE

Freetown, 3rd July 2018. The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR) and the National Minerals Agency (NMA) hereby inform the general public that a 144.12 carat diamond was brought to the Precious Minerals Trading Department of the NMA for valuation and certification on the 28th June 2018, by a diamond exporter, with a valid exporter’s licence numbered DEL 08/18. 

Amnesty calls for end to Sierra Leone "police crackdown"

The human rights organisation, Amnesty International has called on the new government in Sierra Leone to end police crackdown on peaceful protests.

In a  new report released today, the group also calls for the lifting of restrictions on peaceful demonstrations “and ending entrenched impunity for police killings of protesters” .
