Kenya Airways “abandons” Sierra Leonean passengers in Thailand

At least nine Sierra Leoneans, among them four women, have been left stranded for six days now in Vietnam and later Thailand after their Kenya Airways plane suffered “an engine problem”.

Speaking to Politico on the line from Bangkok, the passengers who were among over 200 other passengers said they were all government officials on their way from a seminar in China. 

Sierra Leone to go ahead with controversial airport

The controversial Mamamah Airport in Sierra Leone will go ahead as "all obstacles are now cleared", according to the outgoing Chinese ambassador to the country. 

Speaking today at a conferment ceremony awarding him an honorary doctorate degree by the University of Sierra Leone, Ambassador Zhao Yanbo said President Ernest Bai Koroma was scheduled to pay a state visit to China before the end of the year. 

Sierra Leone announces new shift in polio immunisation campaign

Sierra Leone has announced a major shift in its approach to immunisation campaigns ahead of the forthcoming mass vaccination against polio.

The new approach which aims at widening coverage of the targeted population means that henceforth the ministry of health will be engaging community stakeholders, including parents, rather than mere sensitisation, an official says. 

Sierra Leone is set to embark on the third round of mass polio immunisation from 30 September 3to 3 October.

Sierra Leoneans denounce criminal libel

The first national symposium on the Seditious Criminal Libel law in Sierra Leone went underway on Tuesday with chorus of calls for speedy action to repeal it.  

The law is part of the notorious 51-year-old Public Order Act designed to ensure law and order but which many say has been used to limit civil liberties.

Sierra Leone philanthropist urges parents to invest on children

A local philanthropist has called on parents in the Fiama Chiefdom in Kono District to invest on their children as this could serve as investment on their [parents’] own future.

Sahr Edward Alpha, a civil servant based in Bo, was speaking as he presented scholarship and learning material to six pupils in fulfilment of a promise he’d made.

Mr Alpha made the donation through his self-sponsored family charitable organisation, the Alpha Development Foundation (ADeF).

Sierra Leone divided over the death penalty

The death penalty is a bad law which should be done away with, the rights group Amnesty International has said as a fresh debate on the fate of the divisive law in Sierra Leone takes center stage following the sentencing recently of a famous magician.

Baimba Moiforay, better known as LAC, was handed the death sentence alongside co-accused Foday Amara Kamara after the two were found guilty by the Freetown High Court. They conspired to murder popular DJ, Sydney Buckle, better known as DJ Cleff, the court found.
