2.5million HIV infections yearly

Despite gains in medication, which has cut down on the rate of deaths to AIDS, the rate of infection of the HIV virus is still at a worryingly high level, a new study has revealed.

The study shows that 2.5 million people are still becoming infected with the virus that causes AIDS HIV every year.

The findings released to coincide with ongoing international HIV/AIDS conference in South Africa shows that new infections have stagnated after a major leap from the peak rate of 3.3 million in 1997.

Nurses protest in eastern Sierra Leone

Nurses and other health workers at the government hospital in Kenema protested on Friday over the arrest of three midwives recently posted there to bolster the medical team in the fight to beat down the high maternal mortality rate in the district.

The newly posted midwives, Matilda Sandi, Haja Conteh and Isatu Kallie, were issued with a court order to vacate the premises allocated to them by the Medical Superintendent, Dr Prince Masuba.

US$130m for Sierra Leone energy sector

The World Bank Group on Monday announced the approval of a US$130m project aimed at boost Sierra Leone’s epileptic energy sector.

The money will go to funding ongoing efforts to stabilize generation of electricity in the Western area of the capital, Freetown and its environs.

50/50 Group FBC chapter revamped

The 50/50 Group Sierra Leone has revamped its Fourah Bay College Chapter which was on the verge of collapsing.

50/50 group is a non political, non-governmental organisation founded in 1997 and it advocates for the empowerment of women through their inclusion in the national governance structures. The organization believes that although peace had returned to the country through great sacrifices of women, the ideal platform where women could exhibit their talents was not available.
