Save the Children boss makes case for Sierra Leone children

Access to healthcare is crucial in determining the future of Sierra Leone, Helle Thorning–Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children International, has said.

Ms Thorning–Schmidt said at a press conference last week that access to fee healthcare was one of three issues preoccupying the mind of the global charity for children. These, she said, were also at the center of discussions when she met with President Ernest Bai Koroma during her first visit to the country as head of Save the Children.

Sierra Leone Govt warns foreign journalists

The Sierra Leone government has announced a new policy aimed at regulating the operation of foreign media practitioners in the country.

The Ministry of Information and Communication said Tuesday henceforth all foreign media practitioners must obtain an accreditation to engage in any work in the country. Information Minister Mohamed Bangura said the move is meant to protect both the image of the country and the visiting media practitioners.

Sierra Leone civil society calls for police probe

The Center for Accountability and the Rule of Law (CARL) has called on the police to be more accountable for their actions. In a report launched by the civil society group on Wednesday, it condemned the actions of both parties on Independence Day between the police and supporters of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).

“Police and civilians should be equally held to account for the wrong doings that they engaged in,” Ibrahim Tommy, Executive Director of CARL, said.

Sierra Leone children’s commission slams education authorities

The National Commission for Children (NCC) has in a press release urged government to announce at the earliest possible time a date for the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) to take place.

The NCC described the postponement of the NPSE that was supposed to take place on May 7 as unfair to the children, their families and teachers.

Ecobank under fire for "poor" customer service

The Pan-African bank, Ecobank Sierra Leone Ltd, has defended itself from accusations of poor service delivery.

The bank last week came under attack from a group of junior staffers from the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) who claimed they were unfairly treated by the bank which held on to their salaries for too long.
