Ebola demonstrates need for Open Data - World Bank consultant

The experience in the fight against the 2014 Ebola outbreak makes a case for an Open Data system in Sierra Leone, a World Bank Consultant has told Politico.

Ms Jeanne Holm said effectiveness in containing the spread of the virus depended on availability of information on the number of cases which guided the nation on the goal of attaining zero cases before been declared epidemic-free.

Sierra Leone, MCC, sign $44m grant

An agreement for a four-year grant aimed at boosting electricity and water supply in Sierra Leone has been signed by officials from the United States Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Millennium Challenge Coordinating Unit (MCCU) at the Office of the President.

The MCCU is a Sierra Leone government agency set up to work with the MCC which is a US government agency that provides development aids to developing countries who meet specific criteria aimed at promoting democracy and good governance.

MP calls for Independence of Internal Auditors

Ibrahim Kamara, MP of Constituency 105, has said in parliament on Tuesday 17th November that internal auditors in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were supposed to be independent just like those working with the Audit Service Sierra Leone. He said over the years a lot of monies had been allocated to local government for councils for which many local authorities couldn’t account.

40 arrested in southern Sierra Leone over gang violence

Police in the southern regional headquarter town of Bo have confirmed to Politico the arrest of 40 young men and women suspected of involvement in violent cultism.

The police regional media officer South, Inspector Mohamed Bobson Senu, said the development followed an increase in gang crime in the region.

“The city is presently faced with the issue of some cliques comprising of both boys and girls who have been attacking innocent people and injuring them over their properties,” he said.

New NGO policy sparks concern of free speech

After successfully championing the enactment of the Freedom of Information law in Sierra Leone, the Society for Democratic Initiative (SDI) has unveiled its next big assignment.

The local NGO will lead a group of NGOs and INGOs to convince politicians to review a new government policy on the operations of NGO`s in the country. The new policy which has already been drafted as a bill and is due to be presented in parliament for enactment is seen by activists as potentially dangerous for the freedom of expression.

MP demands assurance from Finance Minister

Member of Parliament for Constituency 016, SLPP MP Moiwai Momoh, has said the minister of Finance and Economic Development Kaifala Marah needs to give assurance for the 2016 budget which he said was based on mere assumption.

The MP made this statement on Monday November 16, at the beginning of debate on the budget that was presented to parliament on 6th November this year.

World Bank’s position on liberalization non-negotiable - Country manager

The World Bank’s position on the liberalization of Sierra Leone`s international telecommunications gateway is non-negotiable, new country manager Parminder Brar has said.

The global lender is on a collision course with Sierra Leone whose government appears to have reneged on an agreement that saw the Bank poured millions of US Dollars into its fiber optic project.
