Shandong steel unveiled in Sierra Leone

Shandong Steel Group(SISG), a leading Chinese company specialized in  iron and steel production, has disclosed plans to resume the Tonkolili iron ore mines after they took over from African Minerals in April, 2015.

The company’s vice chairman, Mr Wu Chu, yesterday told the unveiling ceremony at the Radisson Blu hotel in Freetown that they would focus their attention mainly on the Tonkolili Iron Ore mining project with the largest deposits of iron ore in the country.

Sierra Leone opposition split over expulsion

The Secretary General of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party has described as “illegal” the expulsion of Ambassador Alie Bangura from its ranks.

Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie told Politico that the party never gave Bangura a chance to defend himself and there was no enquiry that found him guilty of indiscipline.

He said such an expulsion could only happen if the provisions of the constitution were followed which he said did not happen.

Sierra Leone journalists call for end of state of emergency

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists SLAJ has called for an end to the current State of Emergency saying the country’s democratic credentials “are being badly damaged by the selective implementation of the regulations”.

In his annual address marking World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, the SLAJ president, Kelvin Lewis said “The fundamental human rights of citizens to free expression, especially the right to hold a different opinion and demonstrate is being denied. This threatens peaceful coexistence and democratic inclusion."

Sierra Leone soldier ‘forges’ UK study leave

A Squadron leader in the Air Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces has been arraigned before a military court in Freetown for allegedly falsifying a United Kingdom (UK) study leave approval.

Joseph Shenks is also charged with a conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline.

Police officer detained in soldier’s death

Police Constable Mohamed Kanu, attached to the Operations Support Division (OSD), is in custody for the alleged murder of a soldier of the Forces Intelligence Security Unit in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Head of Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Koroma told Politico that the incident allegedly took place on Wednesday 18th April between 7 and 8am in the Gloucester Village area in the Freetown Peninsular.

CGG wants a citizen-led Const. Review

The civil society group Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) has launched a drive aimed at motivating citizens across the country to participate in the ongoing constitutional review process.

Its executive director, Valnora Edwin, said the project, “Advocacy for a Citizens’ Responsive Reviewed Constitution in Sierra Leone,” was an 18-month long advocacy intervention with a view to create a broader engagement within the constitutional review process.

FBC graduation, no handshakes
