AIG Charlie urges officers to show regard for law

Director of Community Relations in the Sierra Leone Police, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Chris Charlie, has urged all police personnel to respect the rule of law and work within the ambit of the SLP mandate.

He was speaking in connection to an incident last week involving ASP Marie Jalloh, a situation akin to police misconduct. The female officer, reportedly, unlawfully arrested and detained a passenger because he failed to disembark from a vehicle when asked to do so by the officer.

SLPP aspirant preaches reconciliation

An aspiring flag bearer of the Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party (SLPP), Franklin Rogers, has called for reconciliation over issues centered on the sacking of Chief Samuel Sam-Sumana as the country’s Vice President.

Sam-Sumana was sacked by President Ernest Bai Koroma as VP last month, following his expulsion from the ruling All Peoples’ Congress party. Victor Bockarie Foh was subsequently appointed and sworn-in into the office of the Vice President by the President.

FBC admin reacts to lecturers` ultimatum

The administration of Fourah Bay College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone (USL), has reacted to last week`s ultimatum issued by the Academic Staff Association (ASA). ASA is demanding the management of the college meets certain of its demands within 21 days or risk an industrial action.

The management said it would have ignored the ASA press release dated 14th April since it was not addressed to the University of Sierra Leone.

Accountant-General assures of Transparency

Sierra Leone’s Accountant-General has promised transparency and accountability in the management of government funds.

In its first ever press conference since the establishment of the department, Accountant-General Kebbe Kouroma said the best way to do that was to strengthen the relationship between the media and the department.

“This is the time for my department to work closer with journalists than ever before,” he said at the conference held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Finance in Freetown.

Rokel Govt School teachers issue ultimatum

Teachers of Government Rokel Secondary School in central Freetown have issued a 7-day ultimatum to the school authorities demanding certain facilities to be provided or they embark on a sitdown strike.

Speaking to Politico, a senior teacher at the school, Alhaji Abdul Karim Bangura, said he and his colleagues had raised numerous concerns with the school authorities regarding issues that were affecting them as teachers at the school, but that nothing seemed to be forthcoming.

Airtel under fire over poor services

Subscribers of Airtel, one of Sierra Leone’s telecommunication and internet service providers, have expressed dissatisfaction over the poor network services provided by the company for the past two months.

The mobile phone operator, being the oldest in the country, has being providing mobile and internet services to many Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad for over 10 years.
