New NEC boss assures of fairness

The newly appointed chief electoral commissioner of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in Sierra Leone, N’fa Alie Conteh, has yesterday told the country’s parliamentary appointment committee that he would consider himself 95 percent fair, if he was to evaluate himself.

Sierra Leone Ebola baby survives

Twenty-one-month-old Kadiatu Kargbo and her mother Isatu Conteh were discharged and declared Ebola-free on Saturday after two weeks of treatment at the Hastings centre (PTS 1).

A five-year-old and an 11-year-old were also discharged as part of six people discharged at a ceremony at the police academy where the treatment centre is located.

Bloodshed in Sierra Leone opposition

A Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) meeting held last Sunday in Kenema ended in bloodshed. Several party members were beating and wounded.

The party members were in a meeting to turn the sod for the construction of its regional office when a group, described by the party`s Publicity Secretary in the Kenema district as disgruntled, arrived and allegedly disrupted the gathering. Brima Dawson Kuyateh said the group was headed by a party executive member in the district named as Adama Kallon.

FCC worried over lifting of inter-district travels ban

The mayor of Freetown has expressed concerns over the opening of roads leading to and from districts in Sierra Leone, noting that it was slightly too early.

Speaking at the council’s 97th Regular Council Meeting last week, Franklyn Bode Gibson stated that the lifting of bans on district travels was a problem to most of the districts in the country as people now moved freely from one district to another.

Sierra Leone Police to get college

Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police has said they have plans to establish a training college for police personnel and members of other security agencies.

Speaking at a press conference at Fourah Bay College recently, Francis Allieu Munu said the college would be called International Law Enforcement Academy and it would be limited not only to policing disciplines but “to other professional courses that will attract international students.”
