CARL condemns warden’s detention

Executive Director, Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL), Ibrahim Tommy, has condemned the arrest and detention of a traffic warden on the allegation of insulting and provoking Sierra Leone’s Chief Immigrations Officer, Kholifa Koroma.

Tommy told Politico that it was important for the state to protect all workers, especially junior officers who work in the traffic division of the country’s police force.

Sierra Leone probes Ebola response for corruption

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced the institution of an Ebola response transparency monitoring body that`s aimed at tightening the noose over corrupt officials seeking to enrich themselves with funds dedicated to eradicating the Ebola epidemic.

The ACC said it has set up a task force to directly monitor the management of all Ebola funds that had been provided towards the Ebola fight in the country.

Concerns over cross-border infection in Sierra Leone

Pujehun recently set national record by becoming the first district to cross the 42-day period without recording any new Ebola infection. But this has also meant closer monitoring of border activities against potential cross-border infection.

Pujehun calls for reopening of frontier bridge

Pressured by the effect of the closure of the Mano River border, which has almost entirely strangled local cross-border business activities, residents of Sorogbeima chiefdom in the Pujehun District have called on the Sierra Leone government to negotiate with its Liberian counterpart for the reopening of the border.

It was shutdown over concerns of transmission of the Ebola virus disease, which started in Guinea and spilled over to Liberia before finally reaching Sierra Leone through Kailahun in the east.

Defense witness’ competence questioned at court martial

Prosecution at the military tribunal presently trying 13 soldiers of the Sierra Leone Army has questioned the competence of a defense witness to testify before the court as a provost commander, arguing that a particular entry in the Daily Occurrence Book was not made by him.

Sierra Leone civil society faults census

Executive Director of the Institute for Governance Reform, a local research institute based in Freetown, says “government will be unreasonable to push to have a census amidst the Ebola outbreak in the country.”

Andrew Lavalie told Politico yesterday at his office in Freetown that the current Ebola outbreak in the country would not create conducive environment “for a credible census.”

Kono gets Ebola treatment centre

The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) has commissioned and started admitting Ebola patients into its just completed 48-bed capacity Ebola Treatment Centre at Dorma Town in the Gbense chiefdom, Kono District.

Nine patients have been admitted into the center after their blood samples were tested at theKenema District Ebola Laboratory.
