Olympic postponement raises funding challenge for Sierra Leone

The Chef de Mission for the National Olympics Committee (NOC) in Sierra Leone, Unisa Deen Kargbo, has said the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will pose a fresh funding challenge for sporting disciplines in the country.

Kargbo told Politico in an interview that government might have to pick up the burden and sponsor athletes for the games that will now be held in 2021.

On Tuesday, the International Olympics Committee unanimously decided to postpone the game to 2021 due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Rangers club house on track for completion

Bo Rangers club house project is on track for completion by the end of the season. On Saturday the building reached a new height and a step further to completion after it was floated.

The Public Relations Officer of the club, Solomon Demby, told Politico that they were optimistic that they would hand over the building to the club by the end of the season.

Sierra Leone FA contemplates holding elective congress

The Sierra Leone Football Association has said that they have not postponed or cancelled their elective congress amidst looming fears about the Coronavirus.

In an interview with Politico on Thursday, the Head of Media at the FA, Ibrahim Kamara, said they would assess the situation once the date for the congress gets closer.

The elective congress is set to hold on April 18th this year, 29 days from now.

Basketball: Flames book place in playoffs, Blazers edge closer to exit

On Sunday evening, Red Flames booked their place in the playoffs after they defeated Goderich Blazers 84-40. Flames dominated throughout the game despite strong resistance from Blazers in the first quarter.

The win for Flames means they continue their 100% start to the season. But despite it, coach of the team, John Kallon, said they couldn’t have been better.

CAF cancels qualifiers over Coronavirus fears

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers became the latest casualty to the Coronavirus pandemic after the Confederation of African Football decided to cancel match day 3 and 4 of the qualifiers.

The decision was announced on Friday following weeks of speculations about the possible cancellation. The cancellation means that the double header between Sierra Leone and Nigeria that was scheduled to play at the end of this month has been suspended.

FC Kallon aim to raise revenue with merchandise

FC Kallon have said they will focus on merchandise to diversify their revenue base. The club made the disclosure during the launch of their new jerseys for supporters on Saturday.

The new Errea supporters’ jerseys which come in white, green, blue and red colors will be sold Le350,000 for one. When asked if it’s a new revenue stream, the Chairman of the club, Tunde Scott, said: “100%, absolutely! Imagine if you sell 2000 jerseys, that is Le700 million for the club.”
