In a bid to create more platforms for women to have a say and participate in national issues, a new radio station named Rise radio 96.3 FM was yesterday, 28th February launched in Freetown.
Speaking during a brief ceremony to mark the opening of the station, its manager Mariama Bah said that the institution is owned and managed by a woman and that two-thirds of their staff are young women with the potential to grow in the media.
She noted that among other things, the institution has a keen focus on issues affecting women, girls, and youths.
“We aren’t there yet, but so far, I am proud to be part of this generation of inspiring women who are intentionally creating a positive impact for a safe and better world, and at RISE radio 96.3 FM, we remain committed,” she said.
She added: “As a community service media organization, we will continue to ensure that women, girls, and young people use this medium as an advocacy tool to strengthen and build an inclusive and just society.”
Bah noted that Rise Radio intends to connect and amplify the voices of girls, women, and young people and would serve as an advocacy platform for democracy and human rights, promoting an exchange of ideas that enrich people’s lives.
Senior media practitioners from print and electronic media in Sierra Leone admonished the staff mostly university graduates and students to be professional and responsible in the execution of their duties.
The radio according to its manager will also be used to generate funds to support advocacy initiatives for women and girls.
Rise Radio is a community service media organization, which seeks to provide a platform and, an opportunity to amplify the voices of women, girls, and young people in addressing critical and emerging issues affecting them and to promote human rights, a just and inclusive society, democracy and progressive governance through radio broadcast.
