As part of helping urban cities in the management of waste, German NGO Welt Hunger Hlife (WHH) with support from BMZ on the 17th May, 2023 conducted training on Waste Management for staff of Kenema City Council, representatives of Small and Medium Enterprises ( SMEs) and youths groups in Kenema.
In his statement, the Chief Administrator Kenema City Council Joseph T Gando said the training was important and timely for the council especially when one of the core mandates of the council is to generate revenue and ensure service delivery of which waste management is one of the key components.
‘’This will help to perform one of the core functions as council, as waste management is one sector that consumes huge resources’’ said CA Gando.
He pleaded with the participants to do justice to the training so that the knowledge gained from it can make an impact on the people through service delivery.
The Public Relations Officer WHH Sierra Leone, Tamba Bobor said as an organization they are passionate about waste management and that over the years WHH has made interventions in the sector in the cities of Kenema,Koidu and Makeni .
Bobor said that tools being developed will help guide them on the scale of waste collected weekly and annually in the city.
He stated that the project is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.
He recalled how WHH supported SMEs to transform plastic waste and other organic waste into pavement materials for house building and bio-charcoal.
“WHH will continue to support council on waste management in the city’’, Bobor assured.
He said the trainees will be provided the needed skills and that council is expected to rollout bye-laws to keep the city clean.
The Training facilitator who is also the Monitoring and Evaluation officer WHH Philip Tengbeh gave a background to data management in the area of addressing waste.
He said the purpose of the project was to help monitor the performance of waste management in the city.
He said the training will enhance the capacity and knowledge of the participants for effective monitoring of waste activities in Kenema city, serving as a clear indicator of national development.
Tengbeh noted that proper waste data management knowledge by the trainees will help them to understand and analyse data with the stakeholders and donor partners for further support and that over the period WHH has been able to set up steering committees which were responsible for developing bye-laws on waste management. He encouraged them to make good use of the knowledge acquired during the training.
