The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has held a regional consultative engagement with stakeholders on developing tracking mechanisms for effective monitoring of factors surrounding climate change.
In his statement, the Deputy Director of Climate change at EPA, Tamba Emmanuel Nyaka said‘’We want to see the use of tracking mechanism tools that will ensure effective mitigation on climate change,’’ he said.
He noted that the national determine contribution geared toward Sierra Leone commitment in addressing the national climate change adaptation based on the actions that will enhance climate change on the atmosphere. He added that there has been a nationwide consultation to ascertain the contributions by stakeholders input to the document.
The Deputy Director stated that the consultation was done to know whether the activities of those institutions contribute to help reduce climate change impact, saying the document has a lot of priority actions to address that deals with mitigation, adaptation and the release of green gases that has the tendency on global warming.
He further stated that climate change has a lot of issues that causes disasters which the impact can transfer from one community to another and that the tracking mechanism will enable the institutions to know if they have made progress.
The Consultant of the tracking mechanism, Professor Ronnie Frazer Williams said the climate change mitigation policy is part of the Bali action plan of 2007 which called on measurable reportable and verifiable nationally appropriate mitigation commitment.
He encouraged the participants to use the tracking mechanism so that they can attain the target goal on the climate change. He said they have earlier toured the country engaging various stakeholders to collect their input toward the mitigation measures that will address climate change base on the national determines contributions made by Sierra Leone on global climate summit.
Julius Sama, the District Forestry Officer in Kenema under the Ministry of Environment cataloged a lot of the factors that needs to be taken into account if as a country want to succeed in environmental protection and climate change mitigation. He said those factors need collective efforts by stakeholders, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other partners not only in policy making but also the implementation and enforcement of the policy at all levels.
He further stated that in talking about environment protection, authorities at the highest level have to serve as clear examples to the public as that will enhance the actualization and the effectiveness of the law in the country.
Contributions from participants on the use of the track mechanism for an effective input by MDAs toward mitigating climate change formed high point of the deliberations.
