Sino-Sierra Leone Alumni Association (SISLAA) has celebrated National Day of the People's Republic of China. The celebration according to the association which is a body that comprises Sierra Leonean graduates from China or Chinese universities is to deepen the already existing relation between the two countries.
Speaking on the 6th October 2023 at a dinner organized to commemorate the day, President of SISLAA, Dr. Alpheus Koroma said the Chinese community in Sierra Leone keeps growing, noting that it is a contributing factor to why they decided to celebrate the day and invite some Chinese in order to build a good relationship.
Koroma emphasized that the day is very important to Chinese people, explaining that it is a very big holiday in their country and a public holiday. He explained that the country has celebrated the day for 74 years now, explaining that in 1949 the country became a Republic. He added that they struggled a lot before they were liberated, citing that they had a lot of invasions and wars.
He explained that in the 1970s China and Sierra Leone were almost at the same level in terms of development, but noted that “Today their story is completely different from ours; they have gone far ahead because of their commitment to their people”. He said Sierra Leoneans should learn from their Chinese and adopt their model of development.
Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Edward Hinga Sandy said such days are meant to reflect on the past and look at how far a country has come in their development aspirations, stating “I am sure China today stands as a proud nation among the league of nations”.
He heaped praises on China for being helpful and a beacon of hope during a troubled global geopolitical stage, adding that the nation seeks to forge a win-win relationship with other nations.
Sandy said the relationship between the two nations has grown stronger. He said the celebration is equally important to Africans, explaining the strength and energy which China continues to give African nations.
Former Student Foday Nangai gave his experience in China through an article he presented part of which says- “From the vibrant streets of Beijing to the serene landscapes of Guilin, every corner of China has a story to tell. The country’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its historical landmarks, such as the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, and the Forbidden City, which offer a glimpse into China’s glorious past”.
He also spoke of how the Chinese are innovative, entrepreneurially minded, respect tradition and embrace diversity.
“My time as an international student in China was a transformative experience that allowed me to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the country and its people” he said.
