SIERRATEL calls for support

By Crispina Cummings

The information committee in parliament, chaired by Binneh Bangura, MP, has summoned the government-owned telecommunications company, SIERRATEL, to familiarize themselves with the House.

Chairman of Sierratel, Tom Obaleh Roberts, and the deputy managing director, Edward Sesay, say they are ready to provide the country with easy internet access.

Roberts said that they had an open-door policy and had made a lot of improvement, including payment of their debts. He appealed to the committee for support so that they retain their gateway authority, which he said, if liberalised would render them unprofitable.

He said there were faced with many challenges some of which they had not been able to surmount since they last appeared before parliament.

Deputy managing director Sesay said that the biggest problem facing Sierratel was the lack of resources.

“We don’t have enough money. If government can fund us and we get funding from other quarters then Sierratel will be fine,” he said.

“We don’t lack knowledge. What we lack is the resources to move things” he went on.
