Car thief gets three years

By Aminata Phedelia Allie

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No. 2 in Freetown has slammed a 39-month jail sentence on 18-year-old contrary to the Larceny Act of 1916 and malicious damage, contrary to an 1861 law.
Details of the allegations were that the accused, Lamin Kanu, on Sunday 28 October, 2012 stole a Sony Escort taxi car with registration No. ADP-039 and valued at Le 22 million at the Government Model Secondary School compound on Berry Street, in Freetown.
Magistrate Kamanda reminded the accused that the prosecution had called four witnesses, and all of their testimonies proved that he (the accused) was guilty of stealing the car and damaging it. He put
to him that even his own statement to the police proved that he stole the car but denied stealing it.
“The evidence before me is sufficient to prove that you stole that car and damaged it, thus deliberately depriving the owner of using it.
Your punishment is going to serve as a warning to other bad boys that whenever a car owner parks his car, he should feel secured. You are hereby sentenced to three years in prison for count one and three months for count two”, the Magistrate ruled.

Calls for Pademba Road prison to be expanded

By Jenneh Braima

A former Member of Parliament for the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Elizabeth Alpha Lavalie has called for the expansion of the Pademba Road maximum security prison to accommodate more prisoners.

Mrs Lavalie, who is now the CEO of a civil society organization, CISPAN, made this call last week at a regional civil society organizations forum held at the British Council in Freetown. She said the Pademba Road Prison was a clear sign of human rights abuse since it was now accommodating far more prisoners than the number it was built for.

Speaking about women and justice, the former three times parliamentarian said that the local courts had been dominated by men, which she said made it hard for women to take the forefront in administering justice for the abuse of women’s rights by men.

She noted that the next site for the relocation of the prison should be larger than the present one, adding that even prisoners had rights and that overcrowding was a violation of their rights to good shelter.

The chairman of the occasion, Charles Lahai said the meeting was important because it cemented the relationship between the civil society organizations and ENCISS, who organised the forum, to speak with one voice as non-state actors.
