2 years to review Sierra Leone's constitution

By Jenneh Brima

Attorney General and Minister of Justice says the constitutional review process is in progress, adding that in principle it started in December 2008 when Dr. Peter Tucker met with president Ernest Bai Koroma on the planned review.

Franklyn Bai Kargbo told journalists in Freetown that one of the provisions of the Lome Peace Accord that ended the war in 2002 and a recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was to review the 1991 Constitution. He said work proper could start in the next two weeks.

His ministry, he went on, was appointed as the lead agency in the planning process and it started the task two months ago with an overall objective of ensuring national unity, advancing reconciliation and promoting democracy.

Mr. Kargbo said all Sierra Leoneans would be involved in the process while sixty members from all sectors of society would form the committee. The timeframe for the review process is expected to cover some twenty-four months after which the committee would present its report to government.
