Workers killed at LEOCEM

By Crispina Lois Cummings

The Labour and Industrial Relations Committee of Parliament have paid a fact-finding visit to LEOCEM cement factory in Freetown following the death of two casual workers at the factory nearly two weeks ago. The committee say they are investigating whether the deaths could have been prevented.

LEOCEM General Manager, Arne Johansen said the accident occurred while he was attending a meeting of African branches of his organization abroad. He said his company had never experienced an accident of this nature since it was established in Sierra Leone.

According to Supervisor Andrew Bangura at about 10:00 pm just as the second group of workers was taking over, they noticed that Alusine and Abubakarr Tarawallie, contracted from Manpower Employment Agency, were missing.

Ibrahim Turay, a Supervisor from the second shift said they were busy trying to clear a blockage in the machine during which the two men volunteered to go inside a section of the machine called the Silo where "they might have been suffocated by the dust".

Turay said the bodies of both men were found under a heap of cement dust.
