A 45-year-old man who was assaulted and bitten on his right hand by his wife Jattu at IDA Section in Kenema has died. Mohamed Alieu was assaulted on the 24th June, 2013, and died six days later at the Kenema Government Hospital.
According to the late man's senior wife, Mamie Mohamed, her husband was very sick and speechless a day after the assault by her co-wife.
Mamie said that on the 27th June Alie was admitted to the Government Hospital where examination conducted by nurses revealed that his blood pressure had risen beyond the normal limit. She said it remained that way until Saturday when further examination was done by the nurse after which she said, the deceased started "behaving abnormally". He said her husband died the next day.
Police Constable Brima Jusu Musa of the Community Relations Department of the Kenema Police confirmed that the matter is now being investigated.
He said they acted quickly when they received reports that the body of an alleged assault victim who had died in a hospital was about to be buried by family members. He said officers rushed to the scene and found the body being prepared for burial.
"We stopped them and returned the corpse to the hospital where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted" Constable Musa said, adding that the suspect, Jattu, was on the run having left home immediately her husband was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile Police have confirmed that on the 24th June, 2013 Alieu reported a case of assault against his wife at the Family Support Unit following which he was issued a medical form which he failed to return.
Family sources disclosed that the husband was advised to treat the matter at a family level and not return the medical report to the police station.
