The Chief Executive Officer of the sport-betting company, Mercury International says his company will spend more than Le 4 Billion on education and other charitable ventures this year.
Samir Hasanyeh described education as “a priority” to his organisation and announced that many deserving students at all levels of education would receive scholarships from Mercury International this year in keeping with their traditional activities.
He was speaking at Fourah Bay College library last Friday as he officially unveiled a plaque in honour of Mercury International which provided funds for the refurbishment of classrooms and other facilities of the department of Library Information and Communication Studies.
Responding to a request from the director of the institute, John Abdul Kargbo for further support to upgrade the department’s computer laboratory, Hassaniyeh said when his organisation received a proposal for that project they would give it a priority consideration.
In his statement, the President of the Library of Information Science Association, Ibrahim Ma-Sorie Bangura thanked Mercury International for providing the funds with which they refurbished their lecture rooms, the reading room, corridors and the student garden. He said his association would remain grateful to Mercury but would welcome any further support to deal with the problem of “inadequate” classrooms in the department.
The lecturer who coordinated the project, Pastor Solomon Sellu assured Mercury International that the Le 17.5 million donated towards the project was well utilised and that he was “satisfied that the students can be trusted with such support in future.”
