West African Telecoms regulators converge in Freetown today

Sierra Leone today hosts the tenth Annual General Meeting of the West African Telecommunications Regulatory Assembly (WATRA) at the Miatta Conference Center in Freetown.

According to a press release from the National Telecommunications Commission, the 2-day event will bring together independent National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and departments for regulation of telecommunications services established the sixteen countries of West Africa.

Minister of Communications, Ibrahim Ben Kargbo will deliver the keynote address, and at a time when the local mobile phone companies are probably at their worst, NATCOM will present the present of the Sierra Leone’s Telecommunications Regulatory environment.

WATRA was established in 2002 to address present realities in the telecoms industry in the sub-region while focusing on the need for West Africa to evolve a harmonised regulatory identity to boost investment and investor-confidence. It is made up of international development organisations, private telecoms operators, Governments, ICT equipment manufacturers, ICT equipment vendors and industry stakeholders.
