Hundreds of high school students from respective secondary schools in Kenema, eastern Sierra Leone on Friday 19 October 2012 vented their grievances against the introduction of an additional year to senior secondary schooling in the country.
The students who formed a part of the rally to welcome the SLPP presidential candidate Julius Maada Bio, refered to SSS IV as “a
deliberate attempt by the All People's Congress Government to frustrate the entire educational successes this country had recorded
since colonial days”.
Mustapha, an SSS II pupil whose full name and school cannot be named for fear of victimization told Politico that the APC government had “failed to improve the standard of education” in the country something he said would be made worse by the new educational system.
Another student of the Holy Rosary Secondary School said the girl child support was a big failure under the APC adding that before now support for the girl child was very visible as books, uniforms, payment and other school facilities were supplied in the presence of their parents.
“We want Maada Bio to step in and save us from this trouble. How can we spend four years in the Senior Secondary School? We hate it and we pray for our savior” she said.
Mumunatu, a Junior Secondary School pupil awaiting her BECE result lamented over the state of affairs in schools. She said that since they sat to their exams their results were still being awaited.
