Parliament sets up oversight committees

By Crispina Cummings

Parliament has announced the establishment of its oversight committees with the mandate to monitor activities and outputs of all government ministries, departments and agencies.

Deputy minority chief whip Claude Kamanda, MP, announced that over twenty committees with chairmen and deputies had been set up for the ministries of health, mines, education, agriculture, tourism and trade among others to ensure efficiency in service delivery.

Leader of the House Sorie BB Dumbuya, MP, stressed the importance of the committees and urged members to do their oversight functions very well.

Coming in for the first time is Kemokoh Conteh, MP, of the ruling APC party who is a member of the agriculture, transport and aviation, and youth and sports committees. He told Politico that transportation was a big problem across the country and that people were suffering for the lack of such a “basic service”. He said that he would urge committee members to give priority to that and ensure that the problem was minimized.

“Government’s social services are a sacred responsibility. The transport and aviation ministry must be efficient,” he said, adding that he would equally also contribute to the agriculture, youth and sports committees.

He called on the youth to take up agriculture as a career and make it profitable by creating jobs for themselves and their communities.
