200 households receive relief supports

By Alpha Abu

200 Household victims of floods at Kroobay, Dundas Street- PWD  in central Freetown and Bololo west of the capital  have been supported with food and other items funded by the charity German Doctors for Developing Countries.

The recipients of the relief items were victims of flooding incidents that took place in July and August this year.

Catholic Charity Caritas Freetown chapter carried out the distribution of the supplies at Kingtom in Freetown.

Prior to the distribution, Caritas assembled volunteers who conducted needs assessments of the flood victims and took note of the conditions they were in.

Caritas ensured that the most affected especially the female-headed households were given priority.

Each family received 50 kg bags of rice, a gallon of palm oil, a gallon of refined cooking oil, 18kg of onions, and seasonings.

Also, women and girls above 13 were given ‘dignity kits’ which contained sanitary pads, underwear, slippers, soaps for bathing and laundering, and daily dental care products.

One of the beneficiaries 83-year-old great-grandmother Fanta Bangura of Grancess Street Kroobay told Politico she was very grateful to German Doctors for providing the funds, and Caritas for making sure those most affected received the supplies.

Caritas Freetown Programme Manager Ishmeal Alfred Charles oversaw the distribution of the items. He told Politico that an estimated 1,000 (one thousand) people had overall benefited from the assistance.

The Country Representative for German Doctors for Developing Countries, Fanta Daboh witnessed the distribution exercise.

Freetown which is largely a hilly settlement has been experiencing flash floods because of an unregulated housing system. The act has alarmed environmental experts. A mudslide at Mortormeh in rural Freetown in August 2017 left hundreds of Sierra Leoneans dead.
