Members of parliament have met at the Brama Town community centre in Koya and at the Lombeh Harding hall in Newton to officially commission contractors for the rehabilitation of 47.1 kilometres of feeder roads and bridges in the Western Area Rural District.
The project, costing Le 4 billion, will be supervised by the Western Area rural district council, the rural and private sector development project’s sub unit in the rural district, the district officer and district roads authority engineer for the designated project.
The beneficiary roads are Russel to Banga Ground, Five Five to Matainkeh, Newton to Robis, Rogbere to Makoidondo; Manala to Rokai; Brama Junction; Maloga to Mamakay; Crossing to Mapoponni; Ngarahun to Robonka and Mhaineh to Gbobehun all in the Koya district.
Other roads include those leading to Tombo Pepper Wharf in the Peninsular Area.
MPs for the three beneficiary constituencies, Claude Kamanda of 95, Kemokoh Conteh of 94 and Pateh Bah of 92, said they were very happy, noting that the project had long been in the pipeline before government could get the money.
MPs and councillors called on locals to monitor and not to connive with contractors to steal materials. They urged the contractors to do a good job so that the roads “will last for at least 3 to 4 years”.
Kamanda, MP, told the village heads and councillors that they had agreed that any contractor found wanting shouldn’t go scot-free. MPs and councillors pleaded with their constituents to put all differences aside and help improve on the transportation of farm produce.
