President Julius Maada Bio has commended the outstanding performance of Sierra Leone’s national team, Leone Stars for an outstanding performance against the defending champions of AFCON; Algeria which marked the team’s first encounter in the tournament hosted in Cameroon.
In a short video statement, the President urged the team to keep the momentum, saying that the game with Algeria was a beginning. “Our darling Leone Stars has made Sierra Leoneans proud,” he said, noting that the team promised to deliver and they had delivered.He also encouraged all the players to redouble their efforts in order to ensure that the AfCON tourney is won by Leone Stars.
He noted that every Sierra Leonean was happy and smiling in Sierra Leone and everyone will be smiling till the trophy is won and received at the Freetown international Airport.
Goalkeeper Mohamed N. Kamara emerged Man of the Match after stopping the Algerians from scoring throughout the 93 minutes of play.
Sierra Leone which had gone 25 years without qualifying for Afcon was grouped with the defending Champions, Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.Many supporters were worried about the strength of the team to face those teams but yesterday’s performance proved the contrary.
