The city of Bo is going ahead to embark on regular general cleaning even with the halting of this nationwide activity by the central government.

Under the leadership of the Bo City Council, the city embarked on its first cleaning exercise since the halting of the nationwide exerciser on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

People from all works of life, particularly the youth, gathered in parts of the city to clean it up.

Officials say the move is part of the council’s beautification plan for the city, in addition of its desire to prevent any chance of disease outbreak in the city as a result of filth.

The cleaning exercise was preceded by a meeting earlier on Wednesday, 2nd December, 2020, organized by the Council and which brought together stakeholders, including the Paramount Chief, the Resident Minister-South and top figures of the council.

The Bo City Council Chief Administrator, Veronica Fortune praised the readiness of the people as illustrated by their large turnout.

The meeting, among others, discussed the state of filth in the city, with particular reference to the dumping site at mile five, which was said to have been overflowing with waste.

The meeting also discussed the effect of the suspension of fund from the central government to the councils for cleaning exercises.

According to a news dispatch from the communications unit of the Council, Ms Fortune said her aim was to make sure Bo remained the cleanest city in Sierra Leone.

Also speaking at the meeting was the chairman of waste management committee in the council, Councilor Kpakiwa, who noted that cleaning the city of Bo had been part of the activities of the council even before the imposition of the government's general cleaning exercise.

Hinga Navo, another member of the waste management department, lamented that the last few months since the suspension of general cleaning has seen Bo City residents accumulate rubbish to a point that some resorted to depositing waste at the entrance of his residence.

Paramount Chief of Kakua Chiefdom, Prince Lappia Boima, said that as a people, it is the responsibility of residents of Bo to clean their own very environment.

“Stock piling waste in our environment is a synergy for disease outbreak,” he said, noting that he had always been supportive of the council regarding cleaning exercises within the municipality of Bo. As a demonstration of the continuation of this support, PC Boima donated 1million leones to the council towards the upcoming exercise.
