The Commonwealth Secretary-General has reassured her organisation’s support for the Government and people of Sierra Leone, following the recent General Elections that saw President Julius Maada Bio declared the winner by the country’s Electoral Commission.
Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, the latest world personality to congratulate President Julius Maada Bio in a letter personally addressed to Bio said though she was yet to receive the Report of the Commonwealth Observer Mission to Sierra Leone on the recent General Elections, she restated the observer group’s praise for the people of Sierra Leone including the youth for a peaceful exercise of their democratic rights.
She was hopeful that under President Bio’s leadership, ‘’the great nation of Sierra Leone and her people (will) continue to deepen in peace, democracy, and sustainable development’’.
The commonwealth observer mission during the June 24 General Elections was led by former Vice President of Nigeria Oluyemi O. Osinbajo.
The regional bloc ECOWAS also congratulated President Bio for securing a second term.
“The Authority notes the steady progress made in consolidating democracy in the region through regular conduct of transparent, inclusive, peaceful and credible electoral processes’’, the ECOWAS Heads of State said, in a signed communiqué during the blocs last weekend summit in Guinea Bissau.
Also congratulated was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was elected for the first time as Head of State of Nigeria in elections recently
