The Management of Connaught Government Hospital has called on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the hospital and identify corruption risks in a bid to support the facility with recommendations and best practices that will eliminate those risks.
This call according to a report by the Public Relations Officer of the ACC, Sylvanus Blake was made by the hospital Management on the 6th of September 2023 during a meeting.
The Care Manager and Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ibrahim Mark Kapuwa said they will work with ACC to ensure there is change in the institution. Dr. Kapuwa said “Once we get it right at Connaught, we can then get it right across all other levels”, he said.
He explained that despite the efforts made to ensure better output, there are many challenges, especially in the area of quality service delivery in the hospital.
He spoke about the service delivery charter, noting that it has not been reviewed for more than two years and that all prices are outdated. He emphasized that there is a need for integrity and ethical training for their staff, systems review exercise amongst other things.
Dr. Kapuwa said they believe that working with the ACC to fight against corruption is the best route.
The Deputy Commissioner of ACC Augustine Foday Ngobie in recognition of the stance of the doctor said "You are among the few public administrators who have voluntarily approached the commission and requested it to help make your systems resistant to corruption. We are pleased with this and hope others will emulate you”.
He expressed appreciation to the hospital’s management for their effort to fight against corruption in their institution.
The commissioner instructed the Director of the Corruption Prevention Department Rashid Turay to constitute a team that will immediately commence work with the Hospital Management to review the Service Delivery Charter and the conduct of ethics and integrity training, in a bid to enhance quality health care service delivery.
Ngobie assured that the review will commence immediately and added that the process will not go beyond September 30, 2023. The Commissioner on behalf of his institution pledged to conduct robust public sensitization activities on the Service Charter that would be developed and other interventions they will make in the hospital.
