Three FC Johansen players have donated learning materials to Kroobay Community School. Samuel Bekoe, Mammudu Abdul Latif and Raphael Koroma all used a portion of their monthly salaries to embark on the humanitarian gesture.

The donation was done on Thursday, and the donated items include books, pencils, pens and chalk.

According to a statement from the club, Bekoe was quoted saying: “We believe in the power of education to help end poverty. But, without the dedicated support of people with the little affordable opportunities, it will be extremely difficult to end poverty.”

Latif said he related with the children because he grew up in a slum community in Ghana.

“I grew up and started schooling in one of the slum areas in Ghana. And to this day I have made a promise to myself that one day I will extend a gesture to help the deprived and that is exactly what we have started and it will not stop at this school alone, but to other schools that are simply deprived,” Latif said.

The donation is worth Le 1.5 million.

Head Teacher of the school, Abdul Bundu Kamara, said the donation came at a time when the school was just preparing for exams. The school has a population of 250 pupils.

Kroobay is one of the most deprived communities in the capital, Freetown.

FC Johansen had a rocky start to their season until the last four games when they picked up 10 points.
