Work on the installation of an artificial turf at the Kenema playing field has been delayed yet again. The project which was supposed to have started last week is now running in to another week.
In an address by the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association, Isha Johansen on February 1st said: “Within the next two weeks we will start work in Kenema on the artificial turf. And Kenema will also have perhaps the best artificial turf in Africa.”
Her statement was also confirmed by the Head of Football Development at FIFA, Solomon Mudenge who said:
“Yes, I stand to confirm that work will commence in two weeks. We’ve been to the site, the materials are there, its just remobilization that needs to be done and they will be on site to commence work in the next two weeks.”
Saturday marked exactly two weeks since that assurance was given. There is no indication that work has started on the project.
Materials for the project have been delivered to the Kenema playing field more than six months ago. They have been in ruins throughout last year.
However, a highly placed source in football within the district told Politico on Saturday that the work might start next week Saturday.
“The KDFA President told me yesterday that work might start next weekend. Chris Kamara (SLFA, General Secretary) was here and they had a meeting. They might turn the sod on Saturday in a ceremony with the Chief Minister,” the source said.
The FA didn’t respond to a request from Politico for a comment on the issue.
