The Accountant of the Koinadugu District Council, Aruna Samba Kanu is on the run. According to the chief administrator of the council, Sahr Emmanuel Yambasu the accountant has been away for three weeks without any idea about his whereabouts. He said they had tried all means of reaching him without success and that he left without an official excuse.
Many councillors, among them Patrick Kolleh Conteh, have alleged that Kanu fled with Le 150 million which he allegedly withdrew from the Kabala Community Bank and Rokel Commercial Bank as he was a co-signatory to all council accounts. But the chief administrator has denied any knowledge of him having fled with any money. He told Politico that the council had written to the Local Government Service Commission informing them about the development and also recommending the account clerk, Simeon Koroma to become the accountant while council waited for the decision of the commission.
If Kanu did flee with the money, as alleged, it is not clear how he could have withdrawn the said amount when he was not the sole signatory.
Until his transfer to Koinadugu, Kanu was the accountant at the Freetown City Council
Ministries, departments and agencies which receive funds from the council are yet to comment on the issue.
