Justice Adrian Fisher has remanded a 21-year-old accused, Tejan Dickson of 14 Taylor Street, Kissy in Freetown for laughing in court during proceedings.
Dickson, first accused in an ongoing case of seven counts of wounding with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, malicious damage, and throwing of missiles, was standing in the dock together with other six accused at the Freetown High Court No.1 on Wednesday 6th September 2023, for assaulting and wounding the complainant Linda Macauley.
The alleged victim had raised her injured arm for the court to see, followed by a burst of laughter from the first accused.
Up to this time, all seven accused were on bail, and the first accused because of his behavior in court, was immediately remanded in prison, whilst the others were granted bail.
Lawyer prosecuting the matter, Solomon Christina Kekurah, told Politico that the accused and complainant are neighbours, who quarreled that degenerated into a fight.
However, he said the parties had agreed to settle the matter out of court.
Kekurah said it was time for them to inform the presiding judge about the development when the first accused showed disrespect to the court by laughing.
The accused were ordered to pay a compensation fee of two thousand New Leones (Nle 2,000) to the complaint.
