The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has in a press release dated 1st November 2023 expressed concern at a Public Notice purported to have originated from the Ministry and sent out to School Authorities and Parents regarding the collection of data on behalf of the ministry.
The release says whilst the Ministry acknowledges that the author of that piece is a staff of the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) Programme, it however clarified that one Mr. Sesay who was believed to have circulated the notice, has no institutional mandate to issue such a notice requesting data for and on behalf of MBSSE.
It pointed out that there are legitimate Directorates and structures charged with the responsibility of collecting and managing data. The Ministry categorically dissociated itself from such “unwholesome conduct” of Sesay seen as a complete misrepresentation of the Ministry, the release stressed.
School Authorities were advised to ignore the public notice and that they should resist any such attempts from individuals, if not coming from the legitimate Directorate or structure through the Office of the Permanent Secretary.
According to the release, the Ministry has also informed School Authorities that it is in the process of putting in place measures to cut down on the bloated rolls in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) a situation it continues to contend with. It stated that one such measure is the presentation of the current school register to the Ministry by School Authorities, backed by their immediate Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, which have to be verified before entry into the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Portal.
It referred to the aforementioned measures as a strict prescription, which requires adherence by School Authorities, warning that any refraction will be at the peril of the individual.
